1983Downs' three children were shot on an Oregon road. One died and two survived. A jury convicted Downs of murder, attempted murder and assault.
Susan Smith
1994Smith reported that her two young sons had been taken in a carjacking. She later confessed to letting her car roll into a South Carolina lake with the boys strapped inside. She was convicted of murdering both children and sentenced to life in prison.
Andrea Yates
2001–2006Yates drowned her five children in the family bathtub in 2001. After an earlier conviction was overturned, a second jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity in 2006. Her case became closely associated with public discussion of severe postpartum mental illness.
Casey Anthony
2008–2011The disappearance and death of two-year-old Caylee Anthony became a national media phenomenon. Casey Anthony was tried for her daughter's murder and was acquitted of murder, aggravated manslaughter and aggravated child abuse. She was convicted of lying to investigators.
Lindsay Clancy
2023–2026In 2023, Lindsay Clancy killed her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, in their Massachusetts home. She did not dispute killing them. Her 2026 murder trial ended in a mistrial after jurors could not agree on whether she was criminally responsible. What happens next remains unresolved.
